About Gusto

Gusto is a modern, online people platform that helps small businesses take care of their teams. On top of full-service payroll, Gusto offers health insurance, 401(k)s, expert HR, and team management tools. Today, Gusto offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York serve more than 300,000 businesses nationwide.

Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts right here at Gusto. That’s why we’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy

About Design at Gusto:

Product Design at Gusto is made up of over 70 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We’re a cross-functional bunch focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops and Front-end Development who are always looking for opportunities to build understanding and empathy for the people who use Gusto. We don’t care a whole lot about swim lanes and we work closely with our partners in Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build and ship experiences that make a difference. We are passionate advocates for thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences and we believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful. Read more about Design at Gusto.

About the role:

We’re seeking a design leader to join our Time Tools team, a key area of growth for Gusto. As the senior design representative in this product area, you’ll partner closely with PM, Engineering, and Data peers to identify and prioritize new opportunities, define problem spaces, and set roadmaps. You'll be a key contributor to the entire product development process—from initial research and concept development to refining UI and launching new features. Additionally, you’ll collaborate with two other designers on your team to design and ship meaningful improvements to our product experience.

About the team:

Gusto is expanding into new product areas, and Time and Attendance is our flagship in a suite of add-ons designed to complement Gusto Payroll. The add-on helps small business owners track time, create and share schedules, manage attendance, and seamlessly sync hours to payroll—all within the Gusto platform. Some of the features this team owns:

  • Time tracking: Allow employees to log hours via web, app, or kiosk, supporting flexible work arrangements like remote and flextime.
  • Scheduling: Create and manage employee schedules, accommodating shifts, availability, and shift swaps.
  • Time off policies and requests: Automate time off management, support complex PTO policies, and ensure compliance with labor laws.
  • PTO balances: Keep track of employee time off with automatic updates that sync vacation and sick days with payroll and calendars.
  • Project tracking: Manage projects with tools for tracking time spent on tasks, analyzing progress, and adjusting workloads.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Work with your cross-functional partners to define a long-term UX vision for your product area and how it fits into Gusto’s broader vision.
  • Co-lead the definition of product strategy, roadmap, team OKRs, and project direction.
  • Build our collective understanding of customers’ needs through research and data.
  • Design and ship both net-new and iterative projects that deliver consistent value to our customers.
  • Contribute to Gusto’s product design leadership community by sharing your skills and experience.
  • Champion our design system and platform standards, and help evolve them through your product work.
  • Mentor and coach other designers on the team to deliver high-quality experiences.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Breadth of impact: This role will be one of Gusto’s most senior design leaders. You should have demonstrated experience leading design direction across multiple teams, and influencing design/product across multiple product areas.
  • Product acumen: This role will contribute directly to business and product strategy. You should be comfortable working with executive stakeholders, and be able to demonstrate how you’ve shaped business decisions.
  • Builder mindset: The person in this role will design and ship customer-facing products, not just plans and documents. You should be able to demonstrate how you’ve used design as a tool for communication and persuasion.
  • High quality bar: This role will be a tireless advocate for our customers’ experience with Gusto. You should be able to demonstrate how you’ve maintained design quality and accessibility across screen sizes, while shipping iteratively to deliver customer value early and often.

Ideally you have:

  • Prior management experience: This role has the potential to grow into a player/coach people management role over time, depending on the goals of the successful candidate.

At Gusto, we strive to provide rewards that empower employees to achieve their financial and personal goals. We offer competitive compensation packages with a strong emphasis on equity based compensation (ownership in Gusto). To learn more about Gusto’s compensation philosophy and benefits offerings please view our Total Rewards Approach page.

Our cash compensation range for this role is $174,000/yr - $235,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $204,000/yr - $254,000/yr San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
