The IT Service Desk Linux Administrator II will be responsible for managing centralized Linux environments and implementing robust security hardening practices. In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical support across our organization, ensuring the stability, security, and performance of Linux-based systems. This role will work with Linux systems, implement security best practices, and support Linux in virtual and hybrid infrastructures as well as endpoints.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide first-line and escalation-level support for Linux-based systems across a centralized environment
- Administer, monitor, and maintain centralized Linux servers, including configuration management, patching, and updates
- Implement security hardening techniques to ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g. NIST)
- Manage and enforce security policies across Linux servers, including user access controls, firewall configurations, SELinux/AppArmor, and auditing
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex Linux system issues related to performance, security, and networking in a centralized environment
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and apply security patches across Linux environments to protect against potential threats
- Perform regular security audits and system health checks to ensure systems remain secure and compliant
- Develop and implement backup and disaster recovery strategies for Linux environments
- Manage user accounts, permissions, and authentication methods across centralized Linux systems (e.g., LDAP, Kerberos, NFS)
- Document all configurations, hardening procedures, and IT support processes
- Automate repetitive tasks and configuration management using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or shell scripting
- Assist with the deployment and configuration of new Linux-based applications and services in a centralized infrastructure
- Provide training and support to end users on secure system usage and best practices for Linux environments
- Manage workloads through JIRA ticketing system and meeting SLA requirements
- Provide IT infrastructure on-call support one week out of a month and manage alerts through OpsGenie
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or equivalent experience in a related field
- 3-6 years of experience with centralized Linux environment administration, including configuration management and multi-server environments
- Proficiency in Linux security hardening practices and tools (e.g. SELinux).
- In-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems (Ubuntu, CentOS, Red Hat, Debian, etc.) and related tools
- Experience with centralized authentication and identity management systems (e.g., LDAP, Kerberos)
- Familiarity with shell scripting (Bash) or other automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
- Strong troubleshooting skills for resolving complex technical issues across Linux systems
- Knowledge of networking principles and how they apply to Linux systems (e.g., IP configuration, DNS, DHCP)
- Ability to manage and apply patches across multiple Linux servers in a centralized manner
- Proficient in using ticketing systems like JIRA, or similar platforms
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey a message clearly, concisely, accurately, and professionally
Preferred Qualifications
- Linux certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, LPIC-2, CompTIA Linux+)
- Experience with cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS, Azure) and hybrid infrastructures
- Familiarity with programing languages (e.g., Perl, Python)
- Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes
- Experience with security compliance frameworks such as CIS, NIST, or similar
- Familiarity with system monitoring and alerting tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus)
- Experience with centralized logging and security information event management (SIEM) systems
- Prior experience working in highly regulated or security-conscious environments
The starting pay range for this position is $84,000 to $101,000 per year however, the base pay offered may vary depending on the level of the position, skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and location.
