Digital Communications Associate

Job Description

The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) is dedicated to strengthening New York City’s vibrant cultural life by providing funding and support to New York City’s cultural community, including the 34 institutions that comprise the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) and more than 1,000 non-profit cultural organizations that receive annual support. This constituency represents a diverse array of organizations - including performing arts groups, museums, theaters, zoos, botanical gardens, visual arts and film centers, community-based organizations, and arts education programs – that are central to the life of communities in every corner of New York City. DCLA also manages a significant portfolio of cultural capital projects; provides free donated materials and supplies for arts programs and arts educators through its Materials for the Arts program; provides capacity building and technical assistance support to cultural groups; and commissions works of permanent public art through the City’s Public Art Program.

DCLA's External Affairs Unit is the primary conduit for information both for the general public and for DCLA’s nonprofit community, handling everything from public testimony to intergovernmental affairs, to media relations, to community relations, to digital communications. In collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders - including the DCLA commissioner and our nonprofit cultural partners in all five boroughs - the External Affairs Unit manages a wide range of communications and external engagement work that touches on every aspect of the agency's operations - from public art to the capital portfolio, to our funding programs, and everything in between.

The External Affairs / Digital Production Associate will support units across the agency in their work to better engage with, inform, and serve New Yorkers. Typical duties will include but are not limited to:

- Work with agency leadership and staff at all levels to develop and implement digital engagement plans to ensure that agency funding and other programs are visible and accessible to the public
- Develop video “explainers” that detail the role the City plays in supporting the non-profit arts community as a way of enhancing understanding of – and access to – these services
- Oversee the production of digital media including videos, website development, online advertising, and email marketing.
- Create concepts and designs for new digital projects to align with City initiatives and priorities
- Coordinate with agency staff to guarantee the workflow, documentation, and standards are being upheld.
- Prepare accurate status reports and reflect required items – such as monitoring of digital correspondence inboxes – in the Mayor’s Management Report and other required reporting
- Ensure all content is on brand and meets City requirements.
- Other special projects as assigned / needed
