Are you a veterinary student or veterinarian looking for an exciting and challenging Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Internship that will sharpen your skills and prepare you for a dynamic career in emergency veterinary medicine? At Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists (CCVS), we offer the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience, work alongside a team of experienced specialists, and provide life-saving care to pets in need. Our growing specialty and emergency hospitals, located in Buzzards Bay and Dennis, MA, are the only emergency and specialty referral centers serving Cape Cod and the Islands.

  • Hands-On Emergency Experience: As an intern, you'll take primary case responsibility on the ECC service, ensuring you're involved in every aspect of patient care—examining, diagnosing, and treating critically ill or injured animals.
  • Expert Mentorship: You'll work under the direct supervision of 7 board-certified criticalists and experienced emergency veterinarians for over 70% of your shifts. This hands-on guidance will provide the expertise and support you need to thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
  • Comprehensive Training: Participate in daily cage-side rounds with specialists, journal clubs, and weekly mortality and morbidity rounds. You’ll also have the chance to present a lecture on a topic of your choice, allowing you to delve deeper into areas of interest.

About the Internship

Our program is designed to help veterinarians develop clinical confidence and hone the decision-making skills necessary for a career in private practice or specialty veterinary medicine. You will work in a collaborative environment with access to top-tier medical resources, including:

  • State-of-the-art Facilities: Work in a hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic tools like CT scanners, ultrasound, endoscopy, in-house labs, and more.
  • Rotations in Key Specialties: Gain exposure across multiple services, including ECC, surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, and radiology.

You will work alongside an expert team of specialists, including:
  • Criticalists (8)
  • Internist (2)
  • Anesthesiologist (1)
  • Radiologist (1)
  • Dermatologist (1)
  • Surgeons (5)
  • Cardiologist (1)
  • Exotic Specialist (1)

This diverse and highly experienced team ensures comprehensive support throughout your internship and guarantees exposure to a wide range of complex cases.

Support Staff

To help maximize your learning experience and work-life balance, CCVS has an extensive support team, including:

  • Over 60 veterinary technicians (many licensed and VTS-certified)
  • Veterinary assistants and liaisons
  • Doctor’s Assistants to help with medical recordkeeping
Internship Schedule, Benefits, and Salary
  • Four-day workweek
  • Rotating days, evenings, and overnight shifts to ensure balanced training
  • On-call shifts may be scheduled for additional patient care needs, with per diem pay for coverage beyond normal shifts
  • Two weeks of vacation, one week of paid CE per year
  • CE allowance and moving allowance provided
  • Competitive salary based on industry standards

Qualifications

  • Graduated from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college
  • Eligible for a license to practice in the United States
  • ECFVG or similar certification required for graduates of non-AVMA-approved veterinary schools
