Managing Editor - SCOTUSblog
SCOTUSblog is seeking a Managing Editor to join the team as part of a broader investment in the company following its recent acquisition by The Dispatch. We are looking for a skilled, creative, and organized individual who is passionate about the Supreme Court, eager to contribute to the production of incisive and impartial legal journalism, and excited about collaborating with the broader Dispatch Media family to revamp the SCOTUSblog and expand its coverage.
The Managing Editor will report to the Executive Editor of SCOTUSblog, and work closely with SCOTUSblog’s reporters, contributors, and contractors to plan and publish all of SCOTUSblog’s content. This individual will also manage most aspects of the website, including posting articles, keeping the statistics page current, updating case pages as soon as decisions are handed down, and a variety of other tasks. The Managing Editor will also have the occasional opportunity to cover Supreme Court-related events such as congressional hearings, justices’ speeches, or other topics of interest.
The ideal candidate should possess some knowledge of the Supreme Court or the law in general, and have experience in journalism. A law degree is not required. Candidates must be adept at multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment that requires juggling numerous substantive and administrative tasks, often on tight deadlines. Strong writing and editing are essential, as is a laser-like attention to detail—and a good sense of humor doesn’t hurt.
Specifically, the job will entail:
- Editing articles, including copyediting for AP and SCOTUSblog’s internal style guidelines, as well as substantive revisions to ensure that articles are written in plain English
- Preparing the Morning Read, a collection posted each weekday morning of news articles and commentary related to the Supreme Court
- Using the WordPress VIP content management system to prepare articles for publication and to update the homepage, the statistics page, the calendar, all case pages, and other aspects of the site
- Working with a third-party live-blogging platform to set up and run the opinion-day live blog
- Working with the Executive Editor, software developers, and others from The Dispatch family on a refresh of the website
- Tracking statistics, creating infographics, and preparing the annual Stat Pack
- Writing articles on and analyses of the Supreme Court, with the ability to take initiative on specific topic areas and pitch new coverage ideas
- Maintaining SCOTUSblog’s X and Bluesky accounts
- Managing outside contractors and vendors as needed
- Reviewing case pages created by law students
In addition to the qualifications described above, the strongest candidates will have any of the following skills:
- Strong knowledge of AP style
- Experience with web content management systems and HTML
- Web development experience
- Data journalism or infographic experience
- Experience with social-media outreach, especially X and Bluesky
This is a full-time position with comprehensive benefits, including 401(k) matching and excellent health insurance. The individual may work remotely, but should be willing to occasionally come to Washington, D.C. We are looking to hire someone as soon as possible.
We’re committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender, gender identity or expression, or veteran status. We’re proud to be an equal opportunity workplace.
