The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager responsible for leading safety, health, and environmental compliance and improvement initiatives across all Hawaiian Host Group employees and locations. This role is critical to developing and promoting a strong safety culture throughout the organization, while ensuring compliance with OSHA, HIOSH, EPA, the Department of Environmental Services, the Hawaii Department of Health, and all applicable local, state, and federal EHS regulations. The EHS Manager will establish industry best-practice programs across Operations and companywide, with a strong presence in the field working closely with frontline team members. This role also oversees training programs related to both employee safety and environmental compliance, ensuring adherence to company policies and all regulatory requirements.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Leadership:
  • Be the face of safety and EHS to all employees, conducting regular safety walks and facility inspections with key leaders across the company. 
  • Lead the development and build-out of a comprehensive EHS program from the ground up, establishing scalable systems, processes, and best practices.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, recognition, engagement, and the implementation of behavior-based safety (BBS) programs.
  • Administer and oversee the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), ensuring active participation at all levels, hazard analyses, standard operating procedures, and other key elements of the program.
  • Supports site safety committee programs for each location. 
  • Develop and deliver employee training programs related to EHS, including onboarding, annual certifications, and role-specific training.
  • Serve as an internal consultant and resource for leaders on EHS issues and best practices, influencing across all levels of the organization.
  • Ensures environmental stewardship in alignment with HHG’s mission and values.
  • Promptly react to and engage around any significant safety or environmental incidents

  • Regulatory Compliance and Policy Development:
  • Design and implement comprehensive occupational safety and health programs across operations.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Establish and monitor key safety performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting systems.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with OSHA, HIOSH, EPA, and other regulatory agencies for workplace safety inspections; accompany inspectors during visits and lead remediation efforts.
  • Maintain and submit all required safety and environmental reports, including OSHA logs, hazardous material permits, emissions reports, and other compliance documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and transportation standards across local, state, and federal agencies, including DOT compliance for fleet operations in collaboration with DSD and Transportation teams.

  • Incident Response & Emergency Preparedness:
  • Lead investigations of workplace incidents, accidents, near-misses, and chemical spills, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Oversee and develop emergency response plans, drills, escalation matrices, business continuity coordination, and incident command protocols.
  • Maintain and manage incident reporting systems, ensuring timely regulatory reporting and proper injury case management in collaboration with the company's insurance provider, Workers’ Compensation Adjuster, and Human Resources.

  • Technical Support & Environmental Compliance:
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of OSHA, HIOSH, and environmental regulations, including HazMat, hazardous waste disposal, air and water quality standards, and chemical handling in food processing environments.
  • Develop and lead safety and environmental training, including specialized plans for chemical spills, ammonia refrigeration leaks, and other environmental hazards.
  • Respond to, coordinate, and follow up on all safety and environmental issues in a timely and effective manner to minimize potential negative impacts on employees and business operations.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support the development and implementation of sustainability programs across the company.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with company policies and procedures, and complete other tasks as assigned.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Leadership Team on safety-related issues, providing proactive recommendations and solutions.
  • Conduct annual and periodic safety audits across all Hawaiian Host Group facilities, reporting findings and recommendations to the Leadership Team.
  • Travel to all Hawaiian Host Group facilities as needed to ensure safety and environmental standards are consistently met.
  • Regular attendance is required for the position.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental or Health Sciences, or a related field; or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in safety administration, including safety regulatory experience interfacing with safety agencies, contractors, and consultants.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a supervisory or management capacity, preferably in a food manufacturing environment. 
  • In-depth working knowledge of OSHA/HIOSH, FSMA, EPA, DOT, and Worker’s Compensation regulations.
  • Must have experience in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. 
  • Knowledge and experience in Sustainability Program development is a plus. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, administrative, and time management skills.
  • Must have proficient computer and technical skills, preferred experience with Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft suite of applications (including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Highly organized and able to work under pressure, prioritize assignments, and collaborate effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Proven experience in training and developing employees in relation to safety and compliance.
  • Prior safety administration experience in food manufacturing or power generation environments is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work with employees at all levels in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
  • Must be flexible and able to travel, including occasional nights and weekends as needed.

  • 1) While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in an office setting or a plant environment and is, on occasion, exposed to weather conditions.
  • 2) The noise level in the office is generally light to moderate.
  • 3) When in the plant environment, which includes the Power Plant and Husking Station, there is exposure to high noise levels (85+ dB). Use of PPE is required in these areas.
