Test & Reliability Engineer | System Testing

What We Do

Gecko Robotics is helping the world’s most important organizations ensure the availability, reliability, and sustainability of critical infrastructure. Gecko's complete and connected solutions combine wall-climbing robots, industry-leading sensors, and an AI-powered data platform to provide customers with a unique window into the current and future health of their physical assets. This enables real-time decision making to increase the efficiency and safety of operations, promote mission readiness, and protect the environment and civilization from the effects of infrastructure failure.

Role at a Glance

As Gecko continues to expand the number and diversity of robotic systems, the Robotics department is expanding our teams that are responsible for ensuring our systems have been designed, built, tested and maintained with the highest standards possible.  The Engineers and Technicians that work in these roles are focused on the overall system performance of our solutions and are responsible for maintaining strong relationships across multiple teams as well as have a strong technical understanding of both the as-designed/as-built product and the operational/working environment our systems are deployed into.  This is a very hands-on team that works across all phases of the product life cycle.

The Test & Reliability (T&R) team is currently a team of strong generalists, but as we grow we are looking to introduce some specialization into the team in certain core disciplines, one of those being System Testing, Evaluation and Reporting. This discipline performs verification and validation testing in support of product development; works with Operations both in the field and in the lab to assess and gather relevant data on product performance, operational environment and system expectations; performs reliability testing on post-production release designs; assists new system R&D efforts with testing/evaluation of new designs.

Candidates will be evaluated primarily in the area of System Testing, Evaluation and Reporting, but also for the breadth of skills needed to be successful in the Test & Reliability team,

Gecko’s engineers work in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.  We’re seeking self-motivated individuals who thrive in a small company environment and are passionate about developing great products which solve significant problems.

What you will do

  • Work in the Robotics organization as a system expert able to help plan and prioritize work that improves the utility of the systems we build and release

  • Become an expert in the operation and use of our systems and serve as a liaison and advisor  to Operations and the development teams

  • Build an understanding of the operational domain for our systems and the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques and technologies we employ

  • Set standards for maintaining fleets of robots and work with Operations support teams to ensure the operational readiness of the fleets

  • Travel to local (to Pittsburgh) test facilities and remote customer sites to perform field testing/evaluations as part of the design and development process and as needed to build operational familiarity

In the role of System Testing, Evaluation and Reporting,

  • Design and execute test plans that simulate real-world conditions, evaluate the system as a whole, and identify any defects or issues that could impact system performance

  • Perform data analysis to evaluate test results, prepare defect reports and related documentation, and provide suggestions to improve the tested product

  • Ensure the robotic systems meet quality standards by rigorously assessing the system performance and behavior under various conditions

  • Create automated test setups and scripts to efficiently conduct reliability tests

  • Work closely with the design and manufacturing teams to implement design changes based on reliability testing outcomes

  • Perform integration and testing activities involving developed application software, identifying and documenting problems and issues

  • Experience with reliability testing methods including environmental chamber - programming and operation, mechanical testing, and electrical testing of consumer electronics

  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience with a methodical approach to troubleshooting

  • Able to be hands on our robotic hardware and software systems with sufficient depth to build trust inside of Engineering and understand cross Engineering trade-offs and approaches

  • Experience working with and debugging electro-mechanical systems and software

  • Proficiency in system test planning, execution, and defect tracking

  • Experience in verification & validation testing methodologies/strategies for electro-mechanical systems

Preferred Skills

  • M.S. degree in an Engineering discipline

  • 7+ years experience in test planning and execution for evaluation of hardware performance

  • 3+ years experience in performing system level testing on complex electro-mechanical systems

  • Proficiency with verification & validation testing methodologies/strategies for electro-mechanical systems

  • Proficiency in performing root cause analysis, reliability testing, and data analysis.

  • Thorough understanding of robotics systems including sensors, actuators, mechatronics and software systems

  • Desire to travel to customer sites with new systems and deployments
