Mechanical Engineer

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer - Industrial Design Support

Location: San Leandro, CA

Company: Gantri

Job Summary:

At Gantri, we’re reimagining how design meets manufacturing—crafting sustainable, design-motivated products that blend artistry with innovation. We’re seeking a Mechanical Engineer to bridge our visionary industrial design team with our global manufacturing partners, ensuring our creations are as functional as they are beautiful. You’ll play a pivotal role in designing the building blocks of our products, shaping them for Gantri’s next-generation digital manufacturing platform. If you’ve supported an industrial design company or bring deep product design experience and are passionate about turning bold ideas into reality with a sustainable twist, this is your chance to shine at a company that’s lighting up the future of design.

Key Responsibilities:

Product Design & Development:

Design and refine key components—the foundational building blocks—for Gantri products (e.g., lights and other items) using SolidWorks, SuperSlicer, and Illustrator, tailored for our next-generation digital manufacturing platform.

Develop detailed hardware component specs from initial industrial design concepts, including injection-molded parts, 3D-printed parts, stamped metal, laser-cut components, and 3D metal printing, for both overseas and domestic production.

Continuous Improvement:

Analyze issue reports against sales data to prioritize high-impact problems.

Perform Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) on returned products to identify root causes and validate solutions.

Organize and analyze issue data using Excel spreadsheets to track trends and support decision-making.

Documentation & Manufacturability:

Create clear, actionable production SOPs and detailed documentation for manufactured parts, optimized for medium-volume manufacturing and international sourcing on our digital platform.

Write specifications and RFQs for sourcing electronic components such as PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assemblies), batteries, cables, and other materials.

Maintain strong CAD organization, with experience in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) preferred.

Project Management:

Oversee project management for new product inventory items, defining key requirements and coordinating timelines using tools like Excel and SolidWorks.

Support exploration of new product categories, ensuring design and manufacturing alignment.

Vendor Management & Sourcing Support:

Collaborate with overseas manufacturing partners and our remote Sourcing Manager to refine hardware development and ensure quality.

Assist with vendor selection and management, providing technical expertise for sourced components, particularly electronics.

Design Optimization:

Use Excel, SolidWorks, and formulas to drive design parameters and optimize product performance and manufacturability for our digital manufacturing platform.

Skills & Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years in mechanical or industrial design engineering, with a focus on hardware development.

Experience working for an industrial design (ID) company as mechanical engineering support or general product design experience.

Proven expertise in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, detailing, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

Experience with specifying electronic components (e.g., PCBA, batteries, cables) and writing RFQs for sourcing.

Strong background in designing injection-molded parts, 3D-printed parts, stamped metal, laser-cut components, and 3D metal printing.

Experience with Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and continuous improvement in a product design context.

Strong background in creating documentation for medium-volume manufacturing and sourcing abroad.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in SolidWorks, SuperSlicer, and Illustrator for design refinement and prototyping.

Ability to use Excel for data analysis, formulas, and spreadsheets to support design decisions.

Knowledge of rapid manufacturing techniques and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).

Familiarity with PLM systems for CAD organization and design management.

Sourcing & Vendor Management:

Experience collaborating with overseas partners and supporting sourcing processes, especially for electronic components.

Soft Skills:

Strong project management skills with a detail-oriented approach.

Excellent problem-solving abilities to address design and manufacturing challenges.

Effective communication for collaboration with design teams, sourcing managers, and overseas vendors.

Additional Desired Skills:

Understanding of sustainable materials and their application in product design.

Experience with rapid prototyping processes.

Familiarity with furniture or non-lighting product hardware.

Background in lighting product design.

Experience with process optimization in a manufacturing or design context.

A creative mindset with a track record of innovative design solutions.

What Gantri Offers:

A front-row seat to revolutionize design and manufacturing, crafting the building blocks for products on our groundbreaking digital manufacturing platform in a vibrant, sustainability-driven environment.

A creative playground where innovation meets purpose, surrounded by a team obsessed with pushing design boundaries.

A supportive, dynamic workplace with a comprehensive benefits package, where your ideas can spark real change.

How to Apply:

Please submit your resume along with a cover letter detailing your experience in industrial design engineering—particularly with an ID company or in product design—failure analysis, and writing specifications for sourcing electronic components. Include examples of projects where you’ve used SolidWorks, SuperSlicer, or Illustrator to design components (e.g., injection-molded, 3D-printed, or stamped parts) for innovative manufacturing platforms, managed new product introductions, or collaborated with overseas manufacturers. Highlight your ability to balance design creativity with practical manufacturability and continuous improvement.
