Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Investigation Division (ID) is an investigative unit within the Department of Correction and remains at the forefront of this Agency’s continued commitment to integrity and accountability. The Investigation Division (ID) is responsible for investigating all Use of Force incidents that occur within the Department of Correction in a timely, efficient manner while remaining un-biased in the analysis of evidence. It is the Divisions responsibility to ensure that all employees act within the guidelines of Directives relating to Use of Force and prepare administrative charges when necessary. The ID operates from a Headquarters Command Center (“HQ”), and one (1) satellite location on Rikers Island. The selected interns will be responsible for assisting the teams with investigative actions, field work and administrative tasks associated with the investigations:

- Shadowing ID Investigators conducting field work in the DOC facilities which includes interviewing PICS (persons’ in custody), collection of evidence (Reports, logbooks etc.)
- Assist in the review and summarization of evidence (i.e. Genetec surveillance video, Securus phone calls, reports etc.)
- Review and audit of "Access" and “ITTS” databases will also be required. This task will require the intern to research closed case folders, establish and enter dispositions and assist in creating reports
- Handling confidential and time sensitive documents (i.e. Legal, SCOC or DOI requests for documents on closed cases).
- The selected candidate will retrieve and move files, perform data entry and work on special projects as needed. Other related functions may include administrative tasks (i.e. filing, copying, fax/scan, answer telephone, and front desk operation).


PREFERRED SKILLS

Possess great communication and interpersonal skills and detail-oriented; Computer Literate, knowledge of excel, word applications, data-entry, possess basic Microsoft Outlook knowledge. Learning objectives include an Interest of study in law a plus (i.e. criminal justice), statistical studies, or public administration.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
