The New York County District Attorney’s Office (DANY) has openings for paralegals throughout the office. Paralegals provide a full range of support to the Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) in the prosecution of crime in Manhattan. The General Counsel’s Office is seeking a paralegal who can assist ADAs in asset forfeiture and restitution matters, and who can also perform tasks in other subject areas handled by the General Counsel’s Office.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist ADAs in tracking funds related to asset forfeiture and restitution payments.
- Prepare all reports that track the intake and disposition of forfeiture and restitution funds;
- Work with others in the office and with partner agencies to identify forfeiture and restitution cases, locate victims, facilitate the transfer of funds to victims and other third parties, manage records relating to property seizures, and assist in preparing property for auctions.
- Assist ADAs in drafting forfeiture and restitution documents, research memos, and other documents.
- Assist ADAs in the investigation of forfeiture cases, asset tracing, net worth analyses, quantification of victim losses, and drafting of documents.
- Assist ADAs in Extradition Proceedings/Process Fugitive (FOA) matters.
- Handle Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests, inter-agency document requests and document requests pursuant to subpoenas and court orders.
- Assists ADAs with Extreme Risk Protective Orders (ERPO) as directed.
- Communicate effectively with all staff, both orally and in writing.
- Coordinate case schedules with courts, law enforcement officials, and defense attorneys.
- Draft correspondence and legal documents.
- Perform related administrative and clerical tasks as assigned.
In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, all candidates must possess the following:
- Level 1 – bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
- Level 2 – bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and one (1) year of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.
- Level 3 – bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.
Preferred Requirements/Skills:
- One or more years’ experience working as a paralegal or in a law enforcement or law office.
- Excellent organizational and creative problem-solving skills are essential.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
- Ability to learn, update, and edit existing proprietary applications, and quickly learn and use various computer systems.
- Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in workflow.
- Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
- Ability to interact and communicate (orally and in writing) with all levels of staff, court representatives, law enforcement representatives.

1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
