Job Description

The Division of Family and Child Health (DFCH) of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is charged with the creation and oversight of programs, policies, services, and environments that support physical and socio-emotional health, and promote primary and reproductive health services, health equity, social justice, safety and well-being for New York City families and children. The Division is comprised of the Bureau of Maternal Infant and Reproductive Health, the Bureau of Early Intervention, the Office of School Health, and the Bureau of Administration. DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- Collect, track, and review and report oral health data from primary and secondary sources.
- Maintain relevant data repositories.
- Create and maintain regular reports for use by management, staff, and dental providers.
- Perform descriptive statistical procedures for analyses and reporting.
- Research and identify innovative and appropriate methods for connecting children with dental needs to a dental provider.
- Monitor school based dental service programs' efforts for follow-up care.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data integration, extrapolation, and analytic issues.
- Develop, disseminate, and evaluate results of surveys.
- Clearly communicate data findings to program managers to facilitate necessary program adjustments.
- Coordinate efforts between school-based dental providers, caregivers, and school administrators to strengthen the utilization of dental care for children.
- Perform and expand upon case management initiatives including but not limited to phone calls to caregivers, working with school nurses, assisting with access issues, maintaining a directory of low-cost dental providers, and collaborating with dental insurance providers.
- Counsel and strengthen engagement among parents, caregivers, and appropriate stakeholders on the importance of dental services.
- Maintain multiple assignments simultaneously and function effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Contribute to the writing and development of a variety of scientific materials.
- Support the Oral Health team for ad-hoc projects, assignments, and tasks, when needed
- Participate in emergency response roles in the Incident Command System

PREFERRED SKILLS:

- Ability to manage multiple priories simultaneously and function effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Experience merging, cleaning, manipulating, and managing large and/or longitudinal datasets
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite, strong Microsoft Excel skills preferred.
- Experience with creating and running Zoom and MS Teams meetings
- Strong time management skills required
- Creative, well-organized, and able to complete assignments and meet deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Dental public health experience a plus

Qualifications

1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
