The New York City Comptroller’s Office works to promote the financial health, integrity, and effectiveness of New York City government, in order to strengthen trust, secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers, and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. The Communications Team is the public-facing voice of the Office of the Comptroller, working with the press to share information, using digital tools to communicate directly with New Yorkers, working internally with Comptroller’s office staff to help them communicate their work effectively, and creating communications products to explain the work of the office. The Director of Communications leads that team in their work, and reports to the Chief of Staff.
Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversee the development of integrated communications strategies for cross-organizational projects on priority issues, working with key domain and subject-matter experts, and manage the roll out of all communications opportunities;
- Ensure all communications from the Comptroller’s office, including reports, press releases, statements, quotes, emails, speech drafts, and social media are in line with the Comptroller’s office vision, responsibilities, and standards;
- Supervise and lead the team of 8-10 press & digital staff members in performing their work, providing guidance and support to achieve the Office’s goals;
- Advise on and ensure the execution of direct rapid response to timely events;
- Oversee the integration of design, multimedia content production, email, and social media into coordinated digital strategies to expand the reach of the Comptroller’s office and strengthen direct communications with New Yorkers;
- Track progress against the office’s communications goals, and assess efforts of the office to contribute to advancing policy priorities through communication strategies;
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including key media outlets and journalists; and,
- Perform other related duties and functions as required
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and at least six (6) or more years communications experience in a government, advocacy, labor, or a campaign setting.
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above.
