Job Description

Reporting within the Enrollment Division, the International Student Services Advisor is a multi-faceted role which will 1) provide overall administrative supervision for international students to include recruitment, admission, advising, and retention and 2) represent the Office of Academic Advising for an assigned caseload of students 3) assist with the University’s study abroad program alongside Vice Provost, Dean of the Undergraduate College, Senior Director for Academic Advising, & Faculty.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the University’s Principal Designated School Official (PDSO), ensuring UMSV students, scholars, and departments comply with all government regulations regarding international students and scholars
  • Conduct one-on-one advising sessions with international students and an additional assigned group of students to address academic and personal concerns, create actions plans for student success, and maintain all records relevant to student profiles/progress. Address and diffuse situations of conflict and crisis; make appropriate referrals
  • Assist students with course selection, registration and academic/career goal planning in collaboration with their faculty
  • Assist students with financial aid concerns by partnering with the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of Student Accounts, and the Office of the Registrar to ensure students have completed all necessary paperwork and met all institutional and federal deadlines
  • Serve alongside the Assistant Dean as the study abroad coordinator and work with partner institutions (i.e., St. Mary’s in England, Study USA, University of Arts in Florence, etc.)
  • Assist with managing select semester faculty-led programs abroad in conjunction with academic departments, working collaboratively with faculty to develop, market, recruit, and prepare for the execution of the programs
  • Motivate and encourage students through day-to-day interactions and discussions
  • Proactively collaborate with university-wide departments, faculty, tutors and academic support staff to advocate, identify, and meet the academic needs of the students
  • Manage the University’s Form 1-17, SEVIS recertifications, and re-designation. Responsible for all institutional regulatory reporting requirements as defined by the Department of Homeland Security and SEVIS.
  • Prepare international student data into SEVIS systems abiding by state and federal guidelines.
  • Direct the development and implementation of a robust international support system and immigration processing for all international students.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regarding F, M, J students and exchange visitor scholars and their dependents.
  • Maintain in-depth, advanced knowledge to interpret and provide guidance on federal immigration regulations as they pertain to our international students and scholars.
  • Actively promote and support the University by participation in other campus-wide recruitment activities (i.e. Accepted Students Day), public presentations, and serving on boards and committees.
  • Create weekly and semesterly reports to share data of incoming and current International students
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of prior experience working with International student admissions or international student services, study abroad programs, along with demonstrated knowledge of the student/scholar visa processes
  • Prior DSO or PDSO title preferred
  • US Citizenship/Permanent Residence required for SEVIS maintenance
  • Experience counseling and/or advising college students preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population both individually and in groups. Some experience working with academic youth programs, non-profits, or higher education with exposure to crisis-intervention and/or advocacy counseling
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to the highest standards of professionalism
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be open-minded, non-judgmental and able interact with and advise diverse groups
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed, including occasional weekend and evening hours
  • Experience with college database software (e.g., SS, Banner) preferred

Salary Range: $64,350 -68,000 per year
