Product Designer (Solidworks) - Work From Home

SolidWorks Design and Drawing Preparation

  • Design and model complex parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, applying design-for-manufacture principles.
  • Convert models into 2D manufacturing drawings with correct tolerances, cut lists, bend lines, weld symbols, and general fabrication notations.
  • Save files into correct directory structures and maintain file version control per naming conventions.

Laser Cutter and Vendor Coordination

  • Liaise directly with local or offshore laser cutting partners to send DXF/DWG files individually.
  • Ensure each part file includes nesting, part numbers, and material specifications for production.
  • Confirm turnaround times and maintain vendor engagement logs.

System Management and BOM Control (via Unleashed or similar)

  • Upload drawings and design files to the shared system repository (e.g., SharePoint, internal server).
  • Guide and train internal users (e.g., purchasing, stores, and production team) on how to access Bills of Materials (BOMs) and product specifications in Unleashed.
  • Extract and cross-check L3D numbers and component data from BOMs.
  • Email complete data packages (e.g., PDFs, STEP files, 3D renderings) to downstream users.

File Management and Product Assembly Setup

  • Duplicate SolidWorks projects and rename files appropriately when starting a new version or variant.
  • Import component parts into master assembly files using BOM reference numbers.
  • Include nuts, bolts, washers, and fasteners from local inventory or standard component library.

Hands-On Product Build and Fit-Check

  • Participate in the physical assembly of prototypes or flat-pack kits (e.g., towbars).
  • Use actual hardware components to confirm fit and function against the CAD model.
  • Identify mismatches, update drawings/assemblies, and document learnings for process improvement.

Rendering and Final Presentation

  • Create high-quality renders using SolidWorks Visualize or equivalent for use in client presentations or product manuals.
  • Apply materials, backgrounds, and exploded views to enhance clarity of the design.

Lifecycle and Production Support

  • Provide end-to-end support to production teams during initial manufacturing runs.
  • Address production queries and assist in investigating part failures, inconsistencies, or suggestions for improvement.
  • Update BOMs, drawings, and assembly documentation as needed following QA feedback.
  • Other role-specific duties as they arise.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design, or similar discipline.
  • 3+ years’ experience using SolidWorks in a professional product design and fabrication context.
  • High proficiency in 3D modeling, part assemblies, and technical drawing preparation.
  • Working knowledge of BOM systems such as Unleashed, Fishbowl, or NetSuite.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow structured processes for design documentation and revision control.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with cross-functional teams (procurement, warehouse, production).
  • Confident physically working with components, tools, and basic assembly operations.
  • Previous experience designing mechanical assemblies like towbars, trailers, automotive accessories, or sheet-metal-based products.
  • Understanding of local fabrication practices, including laser cutting, folding, and welding.
  • Experience with render tools such as SolidWorks Visualize, KeyShot, or Blender.
  • Ability to manage small-scale projects independently, with high attention to detail and time efficiency.
  • Creative thinker with the ability to pre-empt design or manufacturing issues before production.
