Pay Range: $34.45/hr. - $44.79/hr.

Workdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; Some evening/weekend work required.

A Consumer Health Supervisor job is available with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Services Department Consumer Health Division. The Consumer Health Division performs comprehensive consumer and environmental health work including the review of building plans, issuance of health permits, and conducting routine health inspections of, food establishments, childcare centers, public pools, food trucks, hotels, and temporary events. A Consumer Health Supervisor supervises and coordinates the investigation and inspection of food service establishments (fixed, temporary, mobile), child-care facilities, public swimming pools and spas, hotels, motels, and the regulation of the Tobacco Free Ordinance. The position also coordinates vector control, plans review, and emergency response programs, and maintains related partnerships. The position also coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and the general public; and provides complex staff assistance to senior management. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university including at least thirty (30) semester hours or its equivalent in a basic or applied science per the Texas Administrative Code (TAC).
  • Possession of a valid Texas Professional Sanitarian (R.S.) or equivalent as required.
  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in any combination of the following disciplines: Animal Services/Control, Code Compliance, Health Inspection, Environmental Pollution, Solid Waste, Building/Construction, or related experience..
  • One (1) year of administrative and/or supervisory experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Candidate selected for hire must pass Pre-Employment Drug Screen, Physical, and Criminal Background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental science, biological science, public health, food science or a related field preferred.
  • Possession of a Certified Pool Operator License
  • Possession of a Code Enforcement Officer License
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have Spanish/English bi-lingual skills

The Consumer Health Supervisor job responsibilities include:

  • Supervises staff, which includes prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary decisions or recommendations. Investigate suspected foodborne illnesses and other complaints filed by the general public regarding consumer or environmental health issues
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality, responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of assigned programs, methods and procedures; and works with employees on the continuous improvement of programs and services.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints; provides information to stakeholders and community members; responds to internal and external customer service requests; provides support for local, state and federal enforcement agencies; and works closely with other departments to provide outstanding customer service.
  • Develops new programs and processes to increase departmental efficiency and effectiveness. Develops educational and training programs; and creates documents for external dissemination to promote compliance with city and state regulations.
  • Identifies opportunities for improving methods and procedures; identifies resource needs; reviews with appropriate management staff; and implements improvements.
  • Provides technical assistance to subordinate staff on complex consumer health related issues, situations, and conditions; conduct inspections and surveys on the more difficult and/or unusual problems, as needed.
  • Participates in the development and administration of assigned program budget. Forecasts funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitors and approves expenditures; and recommends adjustments as necessary.
  • Acts as Consumer Health liaison to city commissions, associations and organizations. Prepares and submits reports with analysis to senior management; and prepares reports for evaluation of programs.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.
  • Physical Demands: Medium work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
