Job Description

The Safety Specialist establishes and oversees the health and safety processes for the entire plant which includes office, laboratory and manufacturing environments. They will take into consideration industry regulations and the specific risks in the workplace to ensure normal work activities are handled safely. They will train employees on safety protocols and enforce them if they’re not being followed properly. The Safety Officer also responds when workplace accidents happen, creating reports and determining ways to prevent similar accidents. 

Qualifications

  • Maintain, improve, and comply with all safety standards and regulations.  This includes all safety reporting required by Federal, State, and Local agencies.
  • Advise and lead employees on various safety-related topics.
  • Ensures compliance of safety and health regulations and standards. 
  • Identifies common safety/health hazards inherent in the organization’s operations and establishes guidelines for protection from those hazards.
  • Prepare, conduct and maintain educational safety training for all employees.
  • Facilitate all investigations of site injuries and workers compensation cases that follow.  After investigation is completed, recommends future corrective action and monitors the follow up actions.
  • Participates in representation with outside regulatory agencies.
  • Monitors periodic performance reports for trends and conditions and alerts management to problems.
  • Ensures site security is adequate which includes cameras, gates, door control, and security services.
  • Conduct and create new hire and onboard training.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
  • Oversee workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employee's safety or well-being.
  • Maintain safety data sheets (SDS) and ensure proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Lead toolbox talks, safety meetings, and ongoing safety awareness initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and documentation.
  • Maintain the safety recordkeeping App, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of incidents, inspections, and compliance records.
  • Analyze safety performance data and provide insights to management.
  • Maintain behavioral based programs, ensuring leadership engagement in identifying unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Track and analyze safety observations, feedback, and action items to improve workplace safety culture.
  • Conduct emergency drills and ensure employees are properly trained for crisis situations.

Additional Information

A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, law, health and safety management or similar fields is required with 1 to 3 years experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with the tools, machines and equipment used in the workplace

  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to teach others the established safety standards
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy skills and comfort with various types of technology used in the industry
  • Ability to work well as a team and interact with different groups of people
