On-call rotation

Terry Fox House is a 24/7, live-in program which provides services to young men involved in the youth justice system, who have been charged with an offense and ordered for either open custody or detention placements. The team provide education and employment support, life-skills programming, and transitional planning which best supports individuals when they leave the program.

Reporting to the Supervisor, this role supports in all aspects of the day-to-day supervision and operation of the program, including training and support of all staff. The Assistant Supervisor provides input and support in the daily operations of the program, including budgeting, and supporting in maintaining Ministry compliance and licensing standards. The Assistant Supervisor is responsible for supporting in maintaining a structured, trauma-informed and safe setting for 24/7 coverage for the youth in our care, as aligned with ministry operational guidelines.

WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE

Program Leadership

  • Support in the development and delivery of programming that meets the needs and goals of individual youth
  • Assist in ensuring that all operational requirements are youth-centered and the program is in compliance with all funder and agency policies and procedures
  • Ongoing development for the self and the team as it relates to anti-oppressive principles and practices and supporting the team in embedding these principles in all aspects of their work

Staff Oversight and Leadership

  • Foster a culture of belonging while supporting with the leadership of a staff team of up to 25, including full-time, part-time, and relief employees
  • Develop and support team members to grow and maintain professional skills through ongoing coaching and feedback, with support from the Supervisor
  • Assist with recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and evaluation of staff, students, and volunteers
  • Responsible for staffing and scheduling needs, including documentation and payroll
  • Modeling the agency’s philosophy and mission statement, as well as the program’s Values and Beliefs at all times
  • Role model appropriate behaviour and communication with youth and team members, including demonstrating how to effectively defuse crisis and support through escalated behaviours using the Crisis Prevention and Intervention model
  • Rotational on-call responsibilities

Partnerships

  • Support with strengthening community partnerships and referral sources for youth, community organizations, mental health supports, youth shelters, etc.
  • Work closely with referral sources and partners including open custody/detention and closed custody facilities, DPSU, Toronto District School Board (TDSB), Toronto Police Service (TPS), community organizations, etc.
  • Provide support to the Education Assistant and school program which serves the youth, in partnership with the TDSB.
  • Foster relationships and represent the program and organization at network tables, community groups, conferences, etc. as assigned.

Administration & Professional Development

  • Actively lead and participate in individual and team meetings, supervisory meetings, planning sessions, case management meetings, and designated trainings.
  • Support in the implementation of the program evaluation and other reporting processes or special projects, as assigned.
  • Participate in strategic planning and other organizational initiatives and committees as required.
  • Regular reporting to funders, internal accounting, and fiscal management of the program budget.
  • Execute other responsibilities as necessary to achieve the objectives and deliverables of the program.
  • Other responsibilities as may be assigned.

WHO YOU ARE

Education/Experience

  • Diploma or degree in the Social Sciences, Child and Youth Care, Social Work. Related education will be considered.
  • Minimum three years’ experience working with youth, youth justice, or social services. Related experience will be considered.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in a supervisory role, with experiences in: recruitment and retention, training/orientation, staff scheduling, performance coaching, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis prevention and intervention.
  • Direct experience engaging with diverse populations and an ability to apply a culturally responsive lens to all interactions, including program implementation and capacity-building with young people.
  • Satisfactory vulnerable sector check (VSC).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A strong understanding of the systemic barriers that young people face and how this may impact youth and their own experiences.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of unionized settings and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively towards desired outcomes.
  • A demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders effectively, respectfully, and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to provide instruction, orientation, training, and feedback to others clearly and with appropriate follow up.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English to ensure clear, accurate, and consistent documentation and messaging in case management, administrative duties, reporting, and email communication.

In addition, the following are considered assets:

  • Understanding of relevant legislation and institutional policies (including the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Education Act, Safe Schools Act).
  • Knowledge of the social service agencies operating in Toronto and a willingness to broaden knowledge with respect to clients coming from outside of our geographic location.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate, CPI, ASIST.
  • Case management experience and experience in a live-in program are preferred.
  • Experience working within a licensed residential setting considered an asset.
