Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('SpinCo') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.

Job Description

The Senior Assignment Manager (NY) will lead efforts in affiliate coordination, user-generated content (UGC) video clearance, and oversee rights and clearances. This critical newsroom leadership role ensures the responsible acquisition, verification, and usage of visual assets across platforms. You will act as the primary liaison with affiliates, wire services (including AP and Reuters), and internal editorial teams. Additionally, you will mentor and train assignment editors and embeds on best practices in sourcing and verifying video content.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage daily coordination with affiliate stations and third-party video providers, ensuring timely and high-quality content acquisition.
  • Oversee all rights and clearances processes for video content, including UGC, partner feeds, and social media sources.
  • Act as the network’s primary liaison with AP, Reuters, and other wire services to secure and track usage rights and licensing agreements.
    Develop and enforce editorial standards and workflows for sourcing, verifying, and using UGC across linear, digital, and social platforms.
  • Manage a team of assignment editors and support staff responsible for video ingest, tracking, and clearance documentation.
  • Collaborate with legal and standards teams to stay current on evolving media law and copyright issues, particularly regarding fair use and third-party content.
  • Provide training and guidance to embeds, assignment editors, reporters, and journalists on sourcing protocols and legal considerations.
  • Maintain detailed tracking systems for all licensed or cleared content to support legal compliance and audit readiness.
  • Participate in newsroom planning around major events and breaking news to coordinate content gathering and affiliate usage.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in a broadcast or digital newsroom, with at least 3 years in a managerial or senior editorial role.
  • Extensive experience working with affiliates, wire services, and third-party content providers.
  • Strong understanding of media rights, copyright law, and UGC verification processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across editorial, legal, and production teams.
  • Proven ability to lead under deadline pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience training and mentoring newsroom staff in editorial policy and legal best practices.
    Knowledge of newsroom systems such as iNews, SLACK, and asset management platforms.

Preferred Qualities

  • Legal or journalistic training in copyright, intellectual property, or digital media law.
  • A strong editorial instinct combined with a meticulous eye for legal detail.
  • A strong understanding of U.S. politics and political coverage plans.
  • Ability to work out of an affiliate station during breaking news in the region.

Salary range: $135,000 - $150,000
