Assistant Finance Controller

We are a rapidly growing regulated utility that operates in several states across the United States. As our Assistant Controller, you will be a key leader supporting the financial management and reporting functions of our regulated utility. Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller and Vice President, you will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, financial accuracy, and internal controls while overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and budget preparation.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Assist in preparing and submitting financial statements in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting for internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and auditors
  • Support the preparation of regulatory filings

Accounting & Internal Controls

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, financial policies, and procedures
  • Assist in managing external audits and regulatory reviews, addressing auditor inquiries and recommendations

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in preparing annual budgets, financial forecasts, and variance analysis
  • Monitor financial performance and provide insights to management on cost control, revenue trends, and operational efficiencies

Regulatory & Compliance Management

  • Stay informed on changes in accounting standards and regulatory requirements affecting the utility industry
  • Ensure compliance with utility regulations, including cost recovery mechanisms, capital project accounting, and rate structures
  • Support the implementation of financial strategies that align with regulatory requirements and company objectives

Team Leadership & Support

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to accounting staff, supporting their professional development
  • Collaborate with other departments to align financial reporting with business activities
  • Assist the Controller with special projects, financial analysis, and strategic planning initiatives

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred)
  • Minimum 5+ years of accounting/financial experience, preferably in a regulated environment
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Experience with financial reporting systems, ERP software, and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with regulatory compliance
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills

Preferred

  • Experience in the utility sector
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local regulations related to utilities

  • Competitive salary range of up to $135 000
  • Benefits package including medical, dental, and vision benefits, 401(k) contribution, insurances and PTO
