Project Engineer

Overview of the position

The Project Engineer (PE) at Dome Construction is an integral part of the Office Operations team, working closely with Project Managers and Superintendents to ensure smooth project execution. This role is ideal for individuals looking to develop their technical expertise, communication skills, and industry knowledge while supporting construction projects.

Classification: Salary / Exempt position

 

EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE

Education (Preferred but Not Required): Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or related field; Equivalent industry experience may be considered in place of a formal degree.

Experience: 0-3 years of experience in a construction-related role, such as an internship, project coordination, or engineering; Exposure to commercial, industrial, or tenant improvement projects is a plus.

 

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Technical & Industry Knowledge: Understanding of construction systems (architectural, structural, MEPF); Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and contracts; Knowledge of bidding, estimating, scheduling, and cost management; Familiarity with construction permits, safety regulations, and inspections
  • Project Execution & Collaboration; Strong coordination and time management skills; Ability to maintain project documentation and facilitate communication; Experience working with trade partners, clients, and internal teams; Problem-solving skills to identify and address project challenges
  • Technology & Software Proficiency; Proficiency in Procore, MS Project, Bluebeam, and construction scheduling tools; Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams); Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new construction software and processes

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

Project Coordination & Documentation

  • Assist in reviewing architectural, structural, and MEPF drawings to support the project team.
  • Maintain and update RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, and project logs.
  • Ensure proper document control, keeping digital files and project information organized.
  • Work closely with the Superintendent and Project Manager to coordinate and track trade partner activities.
  1. Field Presence & Collaboration
  • Conduct regular site walks to understand project progress and identify potential issues.
  • Support daily huddles and field meetings, ensuring clear communication between stakeholders.
  • Develop relationships with trade foremen, vendors, and inspectors to facilitate issue resolution.
  • Assist in quality control checks before wall and ceiling closures.
  1. Scheduling & Logistics
  • Assist in tracking project milestones and critical path tasks in scheduling software.
  • Support collaborative planning sessions by updating visual schedules and constraint boards.
  • Coordinate logistics planning, including site setup, safety signage, and equipment deliveries.
  • Ensure timely permit processing and inspection scheduling.
  1. Financial & Contract Management
  • Assist with bid solicitation and trade partner contract setup.
  • Track and manage change orders, purchase orders, and cost control reports.
  • Support the client invoicing process by compiling and reviewing payment applications.
  • Monitor accounts payable and receivable, ensuring compliance with contract terms.
  1. Safety & Compliance
  • Promote a safety-first culture by monitoring job site safety documentation and daily compliance.
  • Assist in managing eMOD safety tracking and ensuring trade partners meet all safety requirements.
  • Maintain and track Certificates of Insurance and compliance documents.

Physical demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting – Working at a desk, reviewing plans, managing documentation, and attending virtual meetings
  • Frequent standing and walking – Conducting job site visits, inspections, and attending on-site meetings.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, and crouching – To inspect work areas, review construction details, or assess site conditions.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders – Visiting multi-level job sites, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
    Carrying and lifting light to moderate weight – Transporting documents, laptops, or light equipment (typically up to 25 lbs).
  • Exposure to outdoor elements – Including heat, cold, dust, noise, and uneven terrain while on construction sites.
    Navigating active construction zones – Requires awareness of surroundings to ensure safety and compliance.
    Occasional use of personal protective equipment (PPE) – Hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, and steel-toe boots when on-site.
  • Strong visual acuity – Required for reading blueprints, reviewing contracts, and assessing construction details.
    Clear verbal communication – Engaging with project teams, trade partners, and clients in both office and field settings.
    Quick decision-making and problem-solving
    – Managing unexpected construction challenges efficiently.

 

Travel Requirements

  • Regular local travel – Frequent trips to job sites, client meetings, and Dome offices within the region.
  • On-site presence – The project scope and supervisor will determine the number of days per week required at job site locations for overseeing progress and coordinating with teams.
  • Project-based travel – Travel needs depend on project locations, primarily within California
  • Occasional long-distance travel – Rare, but may be needed for training, vendor visits, or company meetings.
  • Valid driver’s license & reliable transportation required
