Job Description

Hours: Full-Time (35 hours)
Work Location: City Hall – 225 Broadway, New York, 10007, Third Floor

Established in 1898, the Public Design Commission reviews architecture, landscape architecture, and works of art on City-owned property. Projects include construction or restoration of structures, such as libraries, fire stations, and bridges; creation or renovation of parks, playgrounds, and plazas; installation of lighting and other streetscape elements; and the design, installation, and conservation of artwork. The Commission holds monthly hearings to review projects, which are primarily submitted by City agencies. There are 11 Commissioners, who serve pro bono, and five full-time staff members. The Commission also acts as caretaker and curator of the City's public art collection and maintains an extensive archive documenting the history of New York City's public works, which is frequently used by historians, students, and other City agencies. The Commission is an advocate for excellence and innovation in the public realm, ensuring the viability and quality of public programs and services throughout the city for years to come.

The Public Design Commission seeks a Project Manager who will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Under the direction of senior staff, assist with capital project design review process for a wide range of project types, including reviewing project proposals, researching projects and contexts, preparing briefing documents for Commissioners and the Executive Director, coordinating with other City agencies and design teams, and drafting design review documents.
- Provide general support for the day-to-day operation of the Commission and assist in administration and logistics for PDC monthly review meetings, including preparing materials and meeting spaces, interfacing with the public, managing audio-visual equipment, and general event responsibilities.
- Compile materials and produce graphic and written deliverables to support public design initiatives, special projects, reports, design awards, and presentations that help to broaden public awareness of the Public Design Commission’s role in shaping NYC’s public realm.
- As a member of a small team, share in responsibility to support and conduct general office duties, which may include drafting correspondence and scheduling coordination.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
