Job Description

At the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB), we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code, and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency, and professionalism. About the Team

The Internal Affairs and Discipline (IAD) unit manages non-criminal allegations of employee misconduct; identifies, investigates, and disciplines low-performing employees and those who engage in misconduct; conducts background investigations on newly hired and prospective Department employees; provides mandatory integrity training to new employees; and conducts routine quality assurance checks of inspectors in the field. Additionally, the unit works closely with the Department of Investigation (DOI) to help maintain the integrity of the Department.


NOTE: This summer internship is for up to 13 weeks, starting from the first day of the internship and ending no later than September 5, 2025. Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week in person.


Position Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Deputy Director/Executive Agency Counsel, the IAD Legal Intern will:
- Gain first-hand exposure to DOB’s role in protecting employees and the public.
- Assist legal staff in managing cases of employee misconduct and conducting background investigations.
- Draft legal summaries, research memoranda, and criminal law analyses.
- Conduct legal research on Correction Law, Fair Chance Act, and Civil Service Laws.
- Observe and understand the role of the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) in adjudicating DOB violations and employee misconduct cases.
- Perform special projects as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director.


Major/ Field of Study

Must be enrolled in an accredited law school.

Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas:
- Administrative Law
- Labor Law
- Public Sector Labor Relations
- Alternative Dispute Resolution

Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
