The Building Maintenance Section (BMS) plays a critical role in keeping Department Facilities operating safe for staff and visitors as it oversees the maintenance for over 250 Department Facilities Citywide. BMS manages multiple facilities renovations that support Department initiatives and unit relocations. BMS is comprised of uniform, civilian trades, professional and administrative staff.
In the Police Department, under immediate supervision, perform common unskilled laboring work requiring physical strength. Moves, lifts and carries items of various weights and sizes. May utilize hand or power-driven equipment in the performance of duties. May be required to operate motor vehicles in connection with the performance of duties. By assignment, may oversee the daily activities of other laborers in the performance of their duties. Examples of work performed include, but are not limited to:
- Moving, lifting and carrying heavy objects and materials;
- May perform demolition work;
- May make use of hand or power-driven equipment in the performance of these duties;
- Operate a forklift;
- Assist in the provision of appropriate care for plantings and lawns, as well as mowing, pruning, cultivating and maintaining lawns, shrubs, and trees.
