Akicita Federal is seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer to provide technical expertise in the design, construction, renovation, and repair of facilities occupied by Indian Affairs. The Mechanical Engineer will serve as a technical advisor and project manager, overseeing mechanical system designs and construction activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and safety regulations. The position supports facility improvement efforts nationwide, providing critical engineering reviews, project tracking, and technical consultations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Provide mechanical engineering technical expertise for the design, construction, renovation, and repair of facilities.
-Monitor and track the progress of designated construction projects, providing routine status reports to officials and leadership offices.
-Review designs, plans, and specifications for major mechanical systems, including:
-Plumbing (water and sewage)
-Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
-Fire suppression, control, and alarm systems
-Provide professional consultations to resolve unforeseen design issues, regulatory limitations, and construction interface challenges.
-Review and assess preliminary and final engineering documents from Architect-Engineering (A/E) firms or other government agencies for design excellence and compliance.
-Utilize computer software systems including CADD (Computer-Aided Design and Drafting), information management programs, and project tracking software to solve engineering problems and manage project workflows.
-Oversee and manage construction activities, from preconstruction site surveys through project completion and as-built documentation.
-Prepare, review, and approve project documents such as system designs, cost estimates, technical specifications, and bid packages.
-Assist in the administration of acquisition documents related to design, construction, renovation, or repair contracts.
-Evaluate the design, layout, construction, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems for functionality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
-Perform professional engineering work to protect life, safety, health, and property across facilities.
-Support critical path scheduling analysis for construction and renovation projects.
-Provide expert technical assistance to stakeholders regarding mechanical engineering matters.
-Create and train school personnel in the creation of Deferred Maintenance Work Orders (DMWOs) in Maximo, ensuring adherence to established quality standards.
-Conduct field inspections to ensure mechanical systems meet required standards and specifications.
Required Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
-Minimum of five (5) years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
-Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, building design and construction practices, site planning, material and labor cost estimating, environmental health, and safety requirements.
-Experience serving as a technical and business project manager for construction and renovation projects.
-Proficiency in computer software programs including:
-Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
-Adobe Acrobat Professional
-Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software
-Project tracking and scheduling tools
-Familiarity with RS Means/CostWorks for cost estimating is preferred.
-Ability to analyze and review construction schedules, designs, and contract documents for compliance and excellence.
Desired Qualifications:
-Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration is preferred but not required.
-Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce technical reports and briefings.
-Familiarity with federal construction and renovation requirements and procedures.
-Experience in training facility personnel in the use of Maximo or similar CMMS systems.
-Ability to lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams.
-Physical ability to perform facility inspections, including walking over rough terrain, climbing ladders, and lifting moderately heavy equipment (under 50 pounds).

-Occasional travel to project sites may be required to perform inspections, conduct site surveys, or provide technical consultations.
