- Provide inspirational leadership of the staff team in a period of transition as we recruit our new CEO.
- Work collaboratively with the President, Officers and Council and staff to ensure that the Academy is influential and impactful at the UK and international level, with Government(s), industry, the public sector, other stakeholders, and the public.
- Be accountable to the Council (board of trustees) for implementing the strategic mission and vision of the Academy.
- Support the trustees in fulfilling their role in compliance with the Charity Commission rules and guidelines and support the current work to update our governance.
- Actively engage and support the Academy Fellowship to deliver the Academy’s strategic mission and support the ongoing work to diversify the Fellowship.
- Review and lead the operational delivery of all Academy business, providing visible leadership, monitoring and direction of staff and support to Fellows engaged in Academy activities. Ensure a focus on maximising the impact of our activities and delivery of our commitments to funders.
- Line manage the six staff reporting directly to the CEO: the four directors; the Head of People and Culture; and the Head of Fundraising (who also manages the Fellowship Manager and the Senior Governance and Corporate Affairs Manager whose work is overseen by the CEO).
- Ensure strong financial management, reduce unnecessary costs and support ongoing efforts to increase and diversify the Academy’s income.

Experience
- Leading high performing teams. Experience of supporting organisations in transition is an advantage.
- Proven track record in leading and delivering results in an organisation in a relevant sector.
- Experience of influencing at senior levels of Government and/or other national/international organisations.
- A comprehensive understanding of excellence in governance, and a demonstrated ability to implement and oversee excellent governance, working with boards or non-executive directors.
- Previous experience of working in the health research sector, particularly in a role related to one of the Academy’s strategic areas, is preferable.
